Why did the government not act on fire safety when warned four years before Grenfell Tower?

Inside Housing today reminded us that it was five years ago, in 2013, that HM Coroner for Southampton, Keith Wiseman, had written to the then housing minister, Mark Prisk, with a series of recommendations following the deaths of two firefighters in a tower block fire in 2010.

The Coroner said that the government should encourage landlords to retrofit sprinklers in all tower blocks over 30 meters.

The Grenfell Tower disaster took place four years later. It had no sprinkler system.

Mr Prisk was replaced as Housing Minister on 7th October 2013. He remains the Member of Parliament for Hertford and Stortford.

Alan Bannon and James Shears were the firefighters killed.
