The government has awarded Brighton and Hove £500,000 to tackle rough sleeping

The Government has announced that £495,107 has been awarded to Brighton and Hove City Council to help people move off the streets.

This is fantastic news for those people who will be helped off the streets this year.  We need to get people off the streets and save lives.

I would congratulate the City Council for securing this money.  The challenge for us collectively is to spend the money wisely to make a real difference to people living on the streets.

From a government point of view, this is, of course, a Band Aid solution, short term funding. What we have needed for a long time, and still urgently require, are changes in policy that prevents people becoming homeless in the first place, the building of council houses, and changes to the benefit system that is causing hardship and homelessness up and down the country.
